Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
I am from the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago. I have lived here my entire life and I’m proud of that because I’m happy to have been able to grow, evolve, and positively contribute to a country that has given me so much. I was born to parents both of Trinidadian and African heritage. I am deeply proud of where I come from and my people. I am even prouder of my family’s heritage. My great, great-grandfather was a slave. He purchased the land my family’s estate now resides on from his slave master. My grandfather and grandmother worked hard to preserve and develop the estate and utilized it to support our family and those within our community through the provision of employment and other opportunities. My grandfather used his influence to help others gain access to land that they now own, building roads, agitating for electricity, and employment opportunities that would allow members of the community to earn and create the lives they envisioned for themselves. It is through their demonstration of hard work, fostering a sense of community, advocacy, and empowerment, that I was able to create a clear vision for myself and the way I want to serve others. It was always rooted in impact as I’ve seen how transformative that can be. It is because of this, that I am committed to continuing to empower those within my community and support them in shifting their mindsets about how we live, operate, and care for ourselves. |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
The home from which I came helped me to curate a strong value system that encompassed hard work, honesty, compassion, and resilience. It is because of these values I can navigate through life’s adversities and overcome the stumbling blocks and hurdles. In addition to this, having an understanding of our history and what our ancestors endured and achieved provides me with a cultural competence that assists in fostering deep, meaningful connections with those I work with which allows me to better serve them. Self-care, though a concept that has been coined only recently in mainstream media, is not a concept that has been taught to us. We have not been taught to value ourselves, instead, we’ve been taught that our worth is hinged on external factors and this is the root cause of various challenges within the Caribbean woman. Her inability to see her worth and harness her power. It is not that we are unaware of our inherent worth, we have just forgotten, and with constant reinforcement of images and correspondence that promotes the aforementioned, we are driven deeper into a space that encourages us to hide. Healing comes when we go back to our source to define who we are, and our worth, and decide how we’d like to show up in the world. Our work together helps women to do exactly that. My Caribbean/African heritage forms a deeply sacred part of my work and I believe that because of it, this is what allows it to be transformative and impactful. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
My work leaves persons better than they came. Leading people home to themselves and helping them cultivate a deeper knowledge of self and a clarity that empowers them to stand in their truth is incrediably beneficial to experiening positive shifts in their lives. When they are able to improve their relationship with themselves, they are able to transfer thato to their interpersonal and workplace relationships, create healthier environments and experience sustainable, healthy relationships; This for me is what creates impact both in our culture and in the community. |
How should potential customers and persons interested in networking & partnerships contact you? |
Interested persons should contact me via email or through the website. |
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams? |
Do not fear what’s been placed within you. You feel called to do it because it is meant for you. That dream, those gifts, are going to change the lives of others. Everything that you need is accessible to you. Continue to put in the work and ask that your steps be ordered by the Divine. |
