Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
Yes, I am African, born in Nigeria, West Africa. My journey has taken me from my birthplace in Nigeria to the United Kingdom, and I now reside in the United States as an African American.
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
My Nigerian heritage has profoundly shaped my approach to leadership development and women’s empowerment. Growing up in West Africa instilled in me core values of community, resilience, and the power of collective upliftment. The strong tradition of women as pillars of strength and wisdom in Nigerian culture directly influences my GURL FIX YOUR CROWN movement and leadership philosophy.
My journey from Nigeria through the United Kingdom to the United States has given me a unique perspective on navigating different cultural landscapes while maintaining authentic leadership. This multicultural experience enriches my work by allowing me to help women from diverse backgrounds recognize and harness their inherent power. The emphasis on community building and mutual support that is central to African culture is reflected in how I structure my leadership programs and workshops, creating spaces where women can both grow individually and lift each other up collectively.
The entrepreneurial spirit I witnessed in Nigerian women, particularly in marketplace leadership and community organization, continues to inspire my approach to empowering women in business. This background has been instrumental in developing practical, culturally-resonant strategies that help women overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential in both corporate and entrepreneurial settings.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
Our work drives profound cultural and community transformation through three interconnected channels:
The GURL FIX YOUR CROWN movement, anchored by our annual retreats and conferences, provides transformative experiences for ambitious, high-achieving women. These immersive events create safe spaces where women can break free from limiting beliefs and overcome imposter syndrome. By addressing these fundamental challenges, we’re not just helping individual women – we’re reshaping cultural narratives around female leadership and success. Each woman who experiences transformation through our programs becomes a catalyst for positive change in her own community, creating a multiplier effect that extends our impact far beyond our direct reach. By empowering women to embrace their authentic leadership potential, we’re fostering a new generation of leaders who understand the importance of lifting as they climb.

Through Brigitte O’Michaels Consulting LLC, we amplify our impact by providing leadership development, executive coaching, team building, and strategic planning services. This work increases the influence and effectiveness of both individuals and organizations, creating ripple effects that transform workplace cultures and communities.

Through Open Gates International, our nonprofit organization, we break barriers and bridge gaps for families worldwide. We focus on creating sustainable opportunities and providing essential tools to help communities overcome socio-economic challenges. This grassroots approach ensures that our impact reaches those who need it most, creating lasting positive change at the family level.
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams?
“One broken dream is not the end of dreaming. If your dreams have been broken, go to sleep, for tomorrow you will dream again.” These precious words from my late mother have guided me from Nigeria to the United Kingdom to America, and they remain my compass in both challenging and triumphant times. They remind us that our resilience lies not just in our ability to persevere, but in our courage to dream anew.
Your crown may feel heavy some days, but remember – queens aren’t made in comfort zones. Every obstacle you face is refining your purpose, every setback is strengthening your resolve, and every “no” is leading you closer to your destined “yes.” As someone who has crossed continents and broken barriers, I can tell you that your dreams aren’t too big – your vision isn’t too bold – and your aspirations aren’t too high.
To every woman reading this: your broken dreams are not your final chapter – they’re the soil from which your greatest achievements will grow. Stand tall in your authenticity, embrace your unique journey, and remember that you carry within you the strength of generations. When one dream shatters, don’t be afraid to dream bigger, reach higher, and envision even greater possibilities.
As you rise, remember to reach back and lift others. For in our community, we don’t just fix our own crowns – we ensure every queen around us shines. Your success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about creating pathways for those who will follow in your footsteps.
Dream fearlessly, lead authentically, and never forget – tomorrow brings new dreams, new opportunities, and new chances to make your mark on the world.
