Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer? |
Felicia Keys is the Founder of Keys2Wellness Inc., a concierge city and community Medspa. Keys2Wellness concierge and brick-and-mortar services platform provide working women, mothers, and daughters with chronic illnesses access to resources and experiences to help them prosper in their day-to-day lives and work successfully. Keys2Wellness Inc.’s mission is to create a warm and compassionate experience whether inside the sanctuary of your home or on the job. We help you live your best life. Keys2Wellness Incs determination to spread warmth to those in need stemmed from her own story. As a sick baby, struggling to breathe in and out of the hospital for breathing treatments and finding comfort in a breathing tent saved her life. My journey started with entrepreneurship after I was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 35 and shortly after suffering from a stroke. I then realized that God had been preparing my journey all along. As a nurse, I had been educating patients for 15 years on chronic care management and how to maneuver through life; now I would have to live by those words. It took 2 years to recover from the stroke fully but I refused to give up my passion in life was to help and serve others. I began to work in a rural health clinic educating and sharing my story. I realized that if there was a bigger calling in my life. I used all the tools to regain my health and overcome the challenges I needed to share with the world, so Keys2Wellness Inc.was born. Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
My ancestry reflects a rich and diverse cultural heritage, blending African American identity with a family background rooted in Indian descent. This combination likely brings together elements from different cultural traditions, histories, and values. On one side, you may connect with the African American experience, with its deep ties to the history, struggles, and cultural contributions of African Americans in the United States. On the other side, your Indian heritage might introduce influences from the Indian subcontinent, including traditions, languages, cuisine, and perhaps religious or spiritual practices that have been passed down through generations. This dual heritage offers a unique perspective, blending the African American experience with the rich and varied cultural traditions of Indian descent. Your ancestry is a testament to the diverse and interconnected world we live in, where multiple cultural identities can coexist and enrich one another. |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
As an African American female, small business minority owner, and personal background, I can certainly discuss how an African upbringing or heritage might impact someone’s work in a Medspa, particularly in an underserved community. If you or someone with African heritage is working in a Medspa, particularly in an underserved community, that background can deeply influence how you approach your work in several ways: Cultural Sensitivity and Understanding: Growing up with an African heritage often means being part of a community that values cultural traditions, communal support, and respect for elders. This cultural sensitivity can translate into a deep understanding of the unique needs and concerns of clients from similar backgrounds. You might be more attuned to the specific skincare needs of people with darker skin tones or be more aware of cultural beauty practices, which can help in providing more personalized and effective treatments. Growing up with 6 other siblings and parents of Christian faith, we didn’t have the means to embark on skincare, health, and wellness. Everything was faith-based. Focus on Inclusivity: An African upbringing might instill a strong sense of responsibility to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to quality care. This could drive a commitment to making Medspa services accessible and welcoming to everyone, especially in underserved communities where such services might be lacking. I was excluded from a lot of things growing up as a child because we were poor and had to work in the field on our days off from school. Empathy and Community Engagement: Being part of a community that has faced historical challenges might foster a deep sense of empathy and a desire to give back. This could manifest in a commitment to offering affordable or even free services to those in need, educating the community about skincare and health, or creating initiatives that specifically target the unique needs of the underserved population. Holistic Approach to Care: African cultures often emphasize holistic health and well-being, including the importance of mental, physical, and spiritual health. This perspective can be invaluable in a Medspa setting, where you might prioritize not just the physical aspects of beauty but also the overall well-being of your clients. Representation and Role Modeling: In an industry where diversity can sometimes be lacking, having an African heritage can make you a role model for others in the community. It can inspire trust and confidence among clients who might feel more comfortable receiving care from someone who shares or understands their cultural background. By combining cultural understanding with professional expertise, someone with African heritage can play a vital role in making Medspa services more inclusive, effective, and impactful, especially in underserved communities. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
The Positive Impact on our culture and the community 1. Promoting Self-Care and Wellness Cultural Impact: In many communities, particularly underserved ones, self-care and wellness might not always be prioritized due to economic constraints or lack of awareness. By offering services that emphasize the importance of skincare and overall well-being, we help shift cultural attitudes toward valuing self-care. Community Impact: By making these services accessible, we empower individuals to take care of their appearance and health, which can boost self-esteem and confidence. This, in turn, can lead to a more vibrant and self-assured community. 2. Education and Awareness Cultural Impact: Through our work, educate clients about the specific needs of their skin, particularly for those with darker skin tones, which may have been overlooked in mainstream skincare. This helps build cultural knowledge and pride in maintaining healthy skin that reflects their heritage. Community Impact: Educating the community about skincare and health can lead to better overall health outcomes. When people are informed, they make better choices, which can reduce the prevalence of skin conditions and related health issues. 3. Inclusivity and Representation Cultural Impact: By providing services that cater to a diverse clientele, including those with African, Hispanic or Indian heritage, you contribute to a culture of inclusivity and representation in the beauty and wellness industry. This can help challenge and change industry standards that have traditionally catered to a narrower audience. Community Impact: Seeing someone from their own cultural background in a professional and caring role can inspire others in the community to pursue careers in health and wellness. It also fosters a sense of belonging and trust in the services being offered. 4. Building Community Trust and Relationships Cultural Impact: Establishing a Medspa in an underserved area can help build trust within the community, as people see that someone cares about their well-being. This trust can extend beyond the Medspa to other aspects of community life, fostering a more connected and supportive environment. Community Impact: By being an active member of the community, offering services that might otherwise be inaccessible, and engaging in outreach or volunteer activities, you strengthen community bonds. This can lead to a more cohesive community that supports one another in various aspects of life. 5. Economic Empowerment Cultural Impact: Providing affordable services or creating job opportunities within our Medspa can have a ripple effect in the community, leading to economic empowerment. This can change cultural narratives around beauty, wellness, and success, showing that these are accessible to everyone. Community Impact: As our Medspa grows, it might contribute to the local economy by hiring staff from the community, sourcing local products, or collaborating with other small businesses. This economic activity can help uplift the community as a whole. Our work, rooted in cultural understanding and community engagement, has the potential to make a lasting, positive impact on both the cultural fabric and the well-being of the community you serve. |
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams? |
To all the women in our community who are chasing their dreams, I want to share this message of hope and inspiration: Believe in Your Unique Power: Every one of us has a unique combination of talents, experiences, and perspectives that no one else has. Your journey may not look like anyone else’s, and that’s what makes it powerful. Embrace your individuality, and trust that your voice, your vision, and your passion have the potential to make a profound impact. Resilience is Your Superpower: The path to achieving your dreams is rarely straightforward, and there will be challenges along the way. But remember, every obstacle is an opportunity to grow stronger, wiser, and more determined. Don’t be afraid to fail, because each setback brings you one step closer to success. Your resilience, your ability to rise after every fall, is what will ultimately carry you to your goals. Lift as You Climb: As you move forward in your journey, never forget the power of community. Support other women, share your knowledge, and celebrate each other’s successes. When we lift each other, we create a network of strength and encouragement that can break down barriers and open doors for everyone. Stay Connected to Your Purpose: In moments of doubt or difficulty, reconnect with the reason why you started pursuing your dreams in the first place. Let that purpose be your guiding light, reminding you of the impact you want to make and the lives you want to touch. When you stay true to your purpose, no challenge can deter you. Know That You Are Enough: You are strong, capable, and deserving of all the success and happiness you seek. Never let anyone make you feel otherwise. Your dreams are valid, your efforts matter, and you are enough just as you are. Keep pushing forward, keep believing in yourself, and know that your journey is inspiring others along the way. You have the power to create the life you envision, and the world needs the brilliance that only you can bring. |
