Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer?
Tanicia Pratt is an interdisciplinary artist, poet aan performer from The Bahamas. She began her career in Nassau’s underground poetry scene, dedicating years to spoken word performance before moving to London to study experimental poetics. Tanicia is also the author of BLUE, a poetry collection that narrates ‘the inescapable blues of living aan loving (in) The Bahamas.’ Her company, Plumbago House is an interdisciplinary production company that centres on experimental storytelling from The Caribbean. Collaborating with artists across the African & Caribbean diaspora, the company tailors authentic literature, film, merchandise and performances for the local community and global audience. Plumbago House also offers branding, publishing and creative direction services for clients that value thoughtful and quality production.
Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
I am a Caribbean woman of African descent. I was born, and am currently based in Nassau, New Providence.
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
Being a Caribbean woman of African descent, my artistic practice is often a feminine observation (or dissection) of the heritage and struggles of those living in The Bahamas, and the larger Caribbean landscape. I am inspired by Indigenous folklore and spiritual traditions, along with personal memory, all rooted in West African traditions. Plumbago House centres stories and expressions from The Caribbean landscape — its language, culture, history and environment are all tailored to the work we produce. My vision is to not only preserve our region’s culture but to also push against it, challenging its current state to open new portals of opportunity.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
Having both witnessed and experienced the struggles that come with being an artist, living in The Caribbean, I was inspired to create a company that offered an opportunity to collaborate with, platform and document artists within my local community. I envision my company as a bridge where artists, brands and the global public meet to engage in the connective expression and authentic storytelling coming from The Caribbean.
How should potential customers and persons interested in networking & partnerships contact you?
hello@plumbago.house
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams?
You’re never too old to go after your dreams. Patriarchy has always tied beauty and value with youthfulness. This society can make you feel as if you’re ‘too late’ to achieve success if you’re not there by thirty. But this is farthest from the truth. Like wine, you only get better with time. Your life experiences make you a skilled marksman, aiming with precision. So although you’re starting something new, you’re never starting from scratch.
