Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer?
Bisa is a brand of plant based, eco conscious supplements made by a dietitian. The brand was born out of my personal experience as a vegan navigating the complex world of supplements, and my professional experiences as a dietitian helping other vegans with the same issue.
Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
I am 100% first generational Ugandan-American. Born and raised in the US, with the vast majority of both sides of my family residing in Uganda (Kampala and Jinja).
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
My Ugandan-American heritage and queer femme identity have profoundly influenced my life experiences, career, and the founding of my business, Bisa. Growing up as a Black woman in an African immigrant family and navigating majority white spaces in both my educational and professional experiences, I learned the importance of having an open-minded and inclusive outlook on life. Celebrating and embracing diversity has always been a core value for me, which I have carried into every aspect of my personal and professional journey.

During my nutrition studies, I quickly noticed the stark underrepresentation of people who look like me—people of color, and particularly Black individuals. This lack of representation in the field of nutrition, combined with the disproportionate impact of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure on people of color, fueled my determination to make a difference. My personal and professional experiences led me to create Bisa, a brand of plant-based, eco-conscious supplements made by a dietitian. By combining my expertise as a dietitian with my commitment to inclusivity and representation, I strive to provide high-quality supplements that address the unique nutritional needs of diverse communities, while also promoting environmental sustainability.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
Bisa’s work positively impacts culture and community by addressing the specific nutritional needs of underrepresented groups, particularly people of color, with plant-based, eco-conscious supplements. By providing high-quality, evidence-based products crafted by a dietitian who understands the unique health challenges faced by these communities, Bisa helps to bridge the gap in health disparities. This commitment to inclusivity not only improves individual health outcomes but also fosters a sense of empowerment and representation within communities that have historically been overlooked by the wellness industry.

Moreover, Bisa is increasing access to plant-based products for Black people and other people of color, who often face significant barriers such as financial constraints and limited opportunities for improved health literacy. By offering affordable, transparent, and well-researched supplements, Bisa makes it easier for these communities to embrace plant-based nutrition. This effort to increase accessibility is crucial in promoting healthier lifestyle choices and enhancing overall well-being across multiple generations.

Bisa’s dedication to sustainability and ethical practices further enhances its cultural and community impact. Recognizing the pervasive issue of environmental racism, where marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by pollution and environmental hazards, Bisa takes a stand by divesting from plastic and using only recyclable and compostable packaging. This reduces environmental harm and promotes eco-friendly habits among consumers, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Additionally, the company’s efforts to donate supplements to local non-profit organizations amplify its positive influence, as it supports the well-being of those in need and strengthens community ties. Through these combined efforts, Bisa creates a holistic approach to wellness that nurtures both people and the planet, fostering a healthier, more inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
