Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
Yes, both of my parents migrated from the island of Jamaica in their 20s, searching for a better life and more opportunities. They grew up in different parts of Jamaica, each with their own stories and dreams, and eventually made their way to the United States. Their paths crossed in their 30s in the vibrant community of Brooklyn, New York, a melting pot of cultures and traditions. Shortly after, I was born into a world that was a blend of Caribbean warmth and American diversity. Growing up in Brooklyn provided me with a unique perspective. I was immersed in the rich tapestry of cultures that the city had to offer, yet my home was a sanctuary of Caribbean traditions.
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
Yes, my parents instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and pride in my Jamaican roots. They ensured that I understood the importance of community and the strength that comes from knowing where you come from. Attending cultural events, participating in Caribbean church events, and visiting Jamaica during holidays were all part of my life, keeping me connected to my ancestry.
In school and beyond, I learned to navigate the complexities of being a first-generation American, balancing the expectations of my Caribbean family with the opportunities and challenges of American life. This dual identity has been a source of strength, allowing me to appreciate diverse perspectives and adapt to different environments.
Today, I carry the legacy of my parents’ journey with me, embracing both my Caribbean heritage and the American experience that has shaped who I am and my work ethic. It’s a blend that enriches my life, providing a foundation of culture and identity that I am proud to share with my clients and the community.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
My work positively impacts culture and community by providing a space for healing, empowerment, and self-discovery, especially for first-generation and women of color who face unique challenges. These communities often experience the compounded effects of cultural expectations, systemic barriers, and mental health stigmas, all of which can create additional layers of stress and isolation. By offering support for anxiety, depression, and life transitions, I help individuals navigate these challenges in a way that honors their identities, experiences, and cultural backgrounds.

I strive to create a therapeutic environment that is both culturally responsive and affirming, where clients feel seen, heard, and validated. By centering their experiences and providing tools for mental health resilience, I not only contribute to their well-being but also foster collective healing. This, in turn, strengthens the community by encouraging a culture of emotional well-being, self-advocacy, and mutual support.

Moreover, by working with first-generation individuals who are often balancing multiple cultural expectations, my work supports their sense of belonging, self-worth, and agency in both their family and professional lives. Helping clients navigate life transitions with confidence and clarity allows them to break cycles of generational trauma, build new pathways for success, and model healthy coping mechanisms for future generations. In this way, my work not only impacts individuals but also contributes to reshaping the broader cultural narrative around mental health in communities of color.
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams?
To all the women in our community who are pursuing their dreams: I want to remind you that your journey is valid, powerful, and worthy of every step you take. As women of color and/or first-generation, you are already carrying the strength of your ancestors and the hopes of those who came before you. You may face unique challenges, but your resilience, wisdom, and ability to navigate multiple worlds will propel you forward in ways that are uniquely your own.

Remember, it’s okay to not have everything figured out right now. Growth and healing take time, and it’s important to honor your mental and emotional health along the way. Each time you push through doubt, each time you allow yourself to be vulnerable and seek support, you are not only paving a path for yourself but for others who will walk beside you.
