Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer? |
Ilho Sunshine: My Self-Development Journals, Parent-Youth Workshops and Coaching. Ilho Sunshine is a Caribbean family business dedicated to supporting the mental well-being of children and young people through the power of My Self-Development Journal, a tool created by our 7-year-old daughter. Based on her own challenges, Ilhora-Lee Louison BCyA wants to help children and young people like her to understand and manage their emotions better. Her journals have been impacting many children and young people’s life and as a result received many accolades such as the British Citizen Youth Award (BCyA), The West London Business Award and the Royal Award. Our journals are an engaging and friendly way for children and young people to express themselves. It has prompts and activities that encourage them to write about their feelings, dreams, and worries. It also includes tips and activities to help them feel more positive confident and resilient. It is not just a journal—it’s a companion that provides them with the tools to feel better, happier and stronger. Our workshops are designed to provide parents/carers with practical skills and strategies to effectively support their children’s mental health. It will provide the emotional support that children and young people need. In addition to our workshops, we offer coaching services for young people, parents/carers and family. Our coaching sessions provide guidance and strategies to support their mental well-being and personal development in everyday life. Finally, we provide a supportive community where parents can connect with others facing similar challenges. This network allows for the sharing of experiences and tips in a safe, supportive and caring environment. These products and services aim to foster resilience, enhance self-awareness, and cultivate a positive mindset among young people, parents/carers and families. |
Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
I was born and raised in Martinique. I translated the journal in French in 2021 to help children and young people from Martinique and Guadeloupe. This year, Ilho Sunshine delivered workshops in schools and churches in Martinique. Also, we had been invited by a mayor of a Martinique to exhibit at their business event. |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
Yes, my heritage has significantly influenced Ilho Sunshine, particularly in the way I approach themes of community, resilience, and diversity. Growing up in a culture enriched by the works of Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, and Maryse Condé has deeply shaped my understanding and appreciation of our diverse narratives and struggles. This cultural background is reflected in the programs I design, which aim to foster resilience and strength, qualities that are often showcased in Caribbean and African communities in response to challenges. Our own experiences with expatriation have added a personal dimension of overcoming challenges and adapting to new environments. This personal journey resonates in Ilho Sunshine, emphasizing resilience as a universal theme.Furthermore, the fact that Ilho Sunshine was initiated by a Caribbean child adds a unique perspective, serving as a role model for other children, illustrating that one’s age does not define their ability to bring about positive change. In my workshops, I integrate these values, teaching both children and parents to effectively navigate and overcome obstacles. This approach not only empowers individuals but also strengthens familial and community bonds, reflecting the collective spirit of my heritage. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
Ilho Sunshine positively impacts our culture and community by encouraging personal reflection and growth, helping young people articulate their thoughts and emotions, which is crucial for personal development. This process not only benefits the individual but also contributes to a healthier, more reflective community. The workshops bring people together, creating a communal learning environment where diverse groups can share experiences and strategies for dealing with life’s challenges. This not only strengthens community bonds but also enriches the cultural tapestry by integrating diverse perspectives and experiences into the dialogue. Coaching sessions provide tailored support, enabling individuals to navigate personal and community issues more effectively. These sessions often focus on developing leadership and communication skills, which are essential for community development and cultural enrichment. Overall, by emphasizing resilience, communication, and self-awareness, Ilho Sunshine helps build stronger, more cohesive communities that are better equipped to face challenges and embrace diversity. This, in turn, enhances the cultural richness and collective well-being of the community. |
