Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
Yes, I am of Caribbean descent. I am a proud Haitian-American, and my cultural background is at the heart of everything I do as a chef and business owner. My catering company, 1804 Fyete, is named after the year of Haiti’s independence a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and pride for the Haitian people. I carry that spirit into every dish I create, using my platform to preserve and celebrate Haitian culture through food, storytelling, and community engagement.
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
Absolutely! My Caribbean upbringing has deeply influenced my work in every way. As a Haitian-American, I was raised with a strong sense of cultural pride, resilience, and the importance of community. Food was always at the center of family gatherings, traditions, and storytelling. Watching my mother and sister cook every Sunday taught me that food is more than nourishment it’s love, history, and identity on a plate.
That upbringing shaped the foundation of 1804 Fyete. The bold spices, slow-cooked dishes, and vibrant colors of Haitian cuisine are embedded in my menus. My heritage pushes me to honor our ancestors’ strength while introducing Haitian flavors to new audiences in an elevated way. It’s also influenced how I serve—generously, joyfully, and with purpose. Everything I create is rooted in where I come from, and my goal is to be use food to preserve, celebrate, and uplift the culture that raised me.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
My work positively impacts both culture and community by preserving and celebrating Haitian heritage through food. With every dish I serve, I share the stories, flavors, and traditions of my ancestors, helping to keep our culture alive and visible in spaces where it’s often underrepresented.
Through my catering company 1804 Fyete and my upcoming food trailer Fyete on Wheels, I create access to authentic Caribbean cuisine while also generating jobs and partnerships with other Black- and Caribbean-owned businesses. I intentionally give back whether it’s donating a portion of event proceeds to support agriculture in Haiti or offering meals to underserved neighborhoods.
My goal is to not only serve amazing food, but also to uplift people, empower other entrepreneurs, and use my platform to educate and inspire through cultural pride. Food is my vehicle, but impact is my mission.
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams?
To every woman chasing her dream: keep going, even when it’s hard, even when it’s lonely, even when it doesn’t make sense to anyone but you. You were born with a purpose, and your gifts were not given to you by accident.
As a woman of Caribbean descent, I know what it means to build something from the ground up with limited resources but unlimited faith. You don’t need everything to be perfect to start just be willing to begin. You’ll learn, grow, fall, and rise stronger each time.
Trust your vision, protect your peace, and remember that your voice and your story matter. Whether you’re building a business, raising a family, or rebuilding yourself your journey is valid, and you are more than enough.
Do it scared. Do it broke. Do it tired. But do it anyway. You are your ancestors prayers.
