Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
Yes, my family is of Caribbean descent. My mother and father and their parents were all born in Puerto Rico. I am Afro-PuertoRican and growing up, I was deeply influenced by the rich culture, storytelling traditions, and sense of community that are part of my heritage. My culture is a one of the key reasons I strive to create meaningful theatre experiences. These values inspire me to bring people together, foster dialogue, and celebrate the power of shared narratives. |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
Yes, my Caribbean heritage has significantly impacted my work. Growing up surrounded by vibrant cultural expressions and storytelling traditions has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the arts and the power of narratives to connect people. This background influences how I curate theatre experiences, emphasizing inclusivity and community engagement. I aim to reflect diverse perspectives and foster connections among individuals through shared stories, celebrating the richness of our backgrounds while promoting understanding and collaboration in the arts. In addition, I recognize how inaccessible theatre can be for many immigrants and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This awareness drives me to form partnerships with venues to make our tickets more affordable, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of theatre. By prioritizing accessibility, I aim to create an inclusive environment where diverse voices and stories can be celebrated. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
My work positively impacts culture and community by making theatre more accessible and fostering connections among diverse audiences. By curating unique experiences that celebrate storytelling, I aim to bridge gaps between different cultural backgrounds and encourage dialogue about shared experiences. Through partnerships with local venues, I ensure that our events are inclusive and affordable, allowing more people to engage with the arts. Additionally, by highlighting diverse narratives and voices, Mandee Marquee contributes to a richer cultural tapestry, helping to cultivate appreciation for the arts within our community. |
