Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer? |
Krowned is a specialized hair care business with over ten years of experience focused on cultivated locs, braids, extensions, threading, and professional natural hair care services. We are currently expanding our offerings, which includes increasing our hair care services and developing new products. I am reinventing techniques and breaking down the myths surrounding natural hair. My mission is to heal, rejuvenate, and strengthen natural hair through our professional services and natural products. We aim to encourage individualism, boost our clients’ self-confidence, and inspire others. This is more than just a business; it is a movement. |
Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
I am of Caribbean descent, specifically from Trinidad & Tobago. My background has significantly influenced my perspectives and experiences, shaping both my personal and professional journey. Despite the diversity in ancestry and language among the countries of the West Indies, they share a largely common culture. This commonality arises from their parallel experiences as plantation colonies. The culture of the Caribbean people is a rich blend of African, American Indian, European, and, in some cases, Asian influences. This unique heritage informs the way I conduct business and engage with my community. |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
My Caribbean upbringing has significantly influenced my work. Growing up in a culture that values community support, resilience, and entrepreneurship, I have embraced these principles in my small business, Krowned. The emphasis on balance and equality has shaped my approach to leadership and employee relations, creating an inclusive workplace that respects diverse perspectives. This cultural foundation motivates me to empower others, particularly women in the community, by providing mentorship and opportunities for growth. My heritage is not just a part of my identity; it drives my commitment to creating a positive impact through my business. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
My work at Krowned focuses on the empowering nature of hair braiding and styling as a means to express identity and cultural heritage. Hair braids are not merely hairstyles; they are a representation of ethnicity, religion, social status, and resilience. By providing services that honor these traditions, I help reinforce the significance of cultural expressions in our community. Through my business, I empower individuals to reclaim and celebrate their identities. I aim to create a space where people can come together to learn about and appreciate the rich history and artistry behind hair braiding. In this way, I contribute to community cohesion, cultural pride, and a sense of belonging among African and Caribbean women. My work is about fostering connections and honoring the past while encouraging future generations to embrace their cultural roots. |
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams? |
You can do anything you put your mind to. For those who reach their dreams, I say congratulations and I truly hope that you found the fulfillment you sought. |
