Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details.
Yes, I’m Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican descent.
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how.
Absolutely, my Caribbean heritage has profoundly impacted my work. Growing up, I often heard the term “pelo malo” or “bad hair,” which shaped my early views of curly hair as messy, unprofessional, and distracting. In corporate settings or spaces where I was often the only one with curly hair and of Caribbean descent, I always stood out. Struggling to find the right products for my hair, I often resorted to straightening and chemically relaxing it to fit standard beauty norms.

However, as I matured, I began to embrace my natural hair and challenge societal norms about what is considered beautiful hair. This journey of self-acceptance and cultural pride has fueled my passion for supporting and empowering others with curly hair through Curly Crown Collective. It’s about celebrating our natural hair and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and represented.
How does your work positively impact culture + community?
My journey of self-acceptance and cultural pride has fueled my passion for supporting and empowering others with curly hair through Curly Crown Collective. By celebrating our natural beauty and creating inclusive spaces, we ensure that everyone feels valued and represented. Through hair education, we encourage women to embrace and care for their natural hair. Seeing more women go natural and love their curls is incredibly rewarding—it’s a movement that’s transforming cultural perceptions and building a stronger, more confident community.
