Anthea McLaughlin: Empowering Caribbean Communities Through Philanthropy
Anthea McLaughlin, CEO of the Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance (CariPhil), embodies a lifelong commitment to social justice, education, and community empowerment.
Her journey spans several countries, cultures, and communities, each leaving an indelible mark on her mission to create a sustainable and thriving Caribbean.
Roots in the Caribbean and Diaspora
Anthea’s identity and work are profoundly shaped by her experiences across the Caribbean and its diaspora. From growing up in the UK, where she witnessed the strength and pride of Caribbean communities, to living in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States, her path reflects the diversity and resilience of Caribbean people.
“Growing up in the UK, I experienced firsthand the strength and pride within our diaspora, which taught me the importance of staying connected to my roots,” she shared. This connection deepened as she embraced the cultural heritage and community bonds in Jamaica and understood the opportunities and challenges faced by Caribbean communities in the United States. Her time in Trinidad and Tobago further solidified her commitment to addressing the unique issues facing the region.
Anthea attributes her passion for community service to her family’s legacy. “Our family’s matriarch in Jamaica was known for her generosity and commitment to the community, and this spirit of giving was continued by my mother and her sisters.” This deeply rooted tradition of resilience, compassion, and service continues to guide her efforts today.
Building Bridges for a Better Future
In 2010, Anthea founded the Bridge Foundation in Trinidad and Tobago to address critical gaps in education and community development. This initiative was inspired by over 17 years of experience in New York City, where she worked on public-private partnerships to reform child welfare, early childcare, and education systems.
“Witnessing the transformative power of these partnerships, I was inspired to bring this model to the Caribbean,” she explained. The Bridge Foundation introduced collaborative frameworks, capacity-building workshops, and knowledge fairs, empowering local leaders to foster sustainable development.
Today, as CEO of CariPhil, Anthea is at the forefront of uniting philanthropic organizations, corporations, and stakeholders to invest in the Caribbean’s social, environmental, and economic development. From climate resilience to economic empowerment, her mission is clear: to create sustainable, impactful solutions for the region.
Mobilizing Change Through Philanthropy
CariPhil plays a pivotal role in bridging the funding gap that hinders the Caribbean’s development. With the region facing a $2.5 trillion investment gap, the organization is a beacon for collective action and strategic philanthropy.
One of CariPhil’s standout initiatives is the Caribbean Tree Planting Project, which has mobilized resources to plant 1.5 million trees across the region as part of an accelerated climate action effort. “This is exactly the kind of regional initiative that diaspora philanthropists can support through CariPhil, knowing that their contributions are driving measurable change,” Anthea emphasized.
In addition to addressing climate issues, CariPhil actively champions equity in philanthropy. Through the Women-Led Climate Philanthropy platform, the organization highlights the contributions of women in shaping climate resilience.
Celebrating Changemakers
In 2023, CariPhil launched the Women Impact Awards, a groundbreaking initiative to honor the contributions of Caribbean women who are driving impactful change in their communities. This program underscores the importance of recognizing and amplifying women’s leadership in philanthropy and development.
Building on this momentum, CariPhil is preparing for the Philanthropy Awards 2024–2025, which will honor individuals and organizations that exemplify innovation and dedication to community-driven development. These awards reflect Anthea’s unwavering commitment to celebrating excellence and inspiring others to contribute to the region’s progress.
Philanthropy in Action Week: A Flagship Initiative
CariPhil’s Philanthropy in Action Week has become a hallmark event, uniting NGOs, philanthropists, and leaders from the Caribbean and its diaspora to discuss and tackle systemic challenges. This annual event fosters collaboration and creates actionable solutions for the region’s most pressing issues.
As the event evolves, Philanthropy in Action Week 2024 promises to expand its reach and impact, focusing on innovative approaches to sustainable development and resilience. It continues to be a powerful platform for driving collective action across the Caribbean.
A Vision for Sustainable Growth
Anthea’s mission is deeply personal. “The work we do at CariPhil is inspired by the resilience of Caribbean people and my own family’s legacy of service, which has always emphasized the importance of giving back and uplifting others.”
Her vision for CariPhil is to create a Caribbean that is not only resilient but also empowered to drive its own future. This involves fostering partnerships that honor the region’s heritage, promoting corporate social responsibility, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Rewarding Moments in a Purposeful Career
For Anthea, the most rewarding aspect of her work is witnessing the tangible impact of her initiatives. From youth mentorship programs in Trinidad and Tobago to literacy projects aligned with the SDGs, each experience has reinforced her belief in the transformative power of collaboration.
“Waking up each day knowing I am purposefully contributing to this collective vision has been incredibly rewarding,” she reflected.
Empowering the Diaspora to Give Back
Anthea sees CariPhil as a vital bridge for the Caribbean diaspora to support their homeland. “Diaspora communities have long maintained strong ties to their home countries, and CariPhil offers an organized, impactful way for individuals and institutions to channel their desire to give back.”
By providing access to data, research, and on-the-ground expertise, CariPhil enables diaspora donors to make informed, impactful investments. It also fosters collaboration through initiatives like the Trusted Partners Initiative, which supports post-hurricane recovery efforts, and the funders database, which ensures resources are allocated to the communities most in need.
Inspiring a Collective Future
Anthea McLaughlin’s journey is a testament to the power of purpose, resilience, and community. Through CariPhil, she is not only addressing the Caribbean’s immediate challenges but also laying the groundwork for a sustainable, equitable future. Her story inspires us to recognize the potential of collaboration and to honor the legacy of those who have paved the way for progress.
As Anthea puts it, “Together, we can create lasting impact.”
