Theresa Crichlow’s Roots: A Foundation of Heritage and Values
Theresa Crichlow’s Caribbean heritage is not just a part of who she is—it is the very foundation of her entrepreneurial spirit. From her roots in a family of resilient and hardworking individuals, Theresa learned early the importance of community, sustainability, and respect for the environment. These values continue to shape her journey today as the founder of BeeFavored, a unique urban beekeeping initiative based in Harlem, New York.
The Birth of BeeFavored
Founded in 2021, BeeFavored was born out of Theresa’s desire to combine her love for people, nature, and community-building into a meaningful business. A deep appreciation for the role bees play in pollination and food security, along with a passion for educating others about sustainability, led to the creation of BeeFavored, also known as The Honey Parlor.
From Rooftops to Wellness: The Mission of BeeFavored
BeeFavored is more than just a honey business. It is an urban beekeeping initiative that transforms rooftop spaces into thriving habitats for bees. By harvesting honey from these hives, BeeFavored produces an array of artisan honey products that blend sustainability with flavor, health, and community wellness. These products include honey blends infused with organic, locally grown fruits and herbs, handcrafted herbal teas, small-batch jams and sauces made with natural ingredients, treats and wellness items for pets, and all-natural beeswax candles and cosmetics.
Creating Economic and Environmental Impact
For Theresa, BeeFavored is about more than selling honey—it’s a way to create lasting change. “The diaspora, particularly in Black and Brown communities, often faces barriers to accessing healthy, sustainable food sources and entrepreneurial opportunities,” explains Theresa. “BeeFavored addresses these gaps by creating economic opportunities and fostering sustainability.”
Through rooftop beekeeping, sustainability education, and economic advancement programs, BeeFavored cultivates a more environmentally conscious and economically empowered community, particularly in Harlem.
Overcoming Challenges as a Black Woman Entrepreneur
As a Black woman entrepreneur, Theresa has faced significant challenges, especially in accessing funding. Despite these hurdles, she has remained resourceful, applying for grants, crowdfunding, and leaning on her community for support. “The journey has been tough,” she admits, “but I’ve been persistent. It’s about being resourceful and relying on your network when times get tough.”
Recognition and Milestones
One of Theresa’s most rewarding achievements was BeeFavored being recognized by 1010WINS as one of New York’s standout small businesses. Winning the $15,000 Skip Grant was a milestone that allowed BeeFavored to expand its community programs, set up additional rooftop beehives, and invest in STEM education kits for children.
“Seeing kids get excited about bees and science is incredibly fulfilling,” Theresa says. “It’s a reminder that we’re planting seeds for the future.”
Building a Sustainable Future
What sets BeeFavored apart is its dual commitment to quality and community. BeeFavored reinvests profits into initiatives that benefit marginalized groups and foster sustainable living. “We’re not just in the business of selling honey,” Theresa emphasizes. “We’re building ecosystems, educating about sustainability, and empowering communities. We’re a movement, not just a business.”
A Vision for Positive Change
Theresa wants the community to know that BeeFavored is more than just a business—it’s a movement to uplift, educate, and empower. “We’re here to make a difference,” she says. “We’re building a sustainable future and empowering individuals, especially in underserved communities.”
