Describe your business, nonprofit or project, and the products and/or services you offer? |
EKUAADDO is an Afrocentric and pluricultural fabric company that creates ready to wear and alternative style garments and accessories. We find inspiration through the fusion of Colombian, Caribbean and Ghanaian cultural elements in telling our stories through Batik, tie-dye, screen printing, kente weaving and many other multiple fabric expressions. We pride ourselves in bringing to life the past, which was told through stories by our ancestors and passed down from generation to generation. Family, Heritage and Tradition are what keeps the brand together. |
Are you Caribbean or African, or of Caribbean or African descent? If you are, please tell us details. |
My father is half Ghanaian , half Jamaican my mother is Ghanaian and I was born and raised in Cali, Colombia |
Do you think your Caribbean or African upbringing/heritage has impacted your work? If so, please explain how. |
I take a lot of creative inspiration from my colourful background which is made up of the dynamic and vibrant cultural communities in Colombia, Ghana and Jamaica. My journey into the world of fashion began at an early age when, I developed my own unique sense of style as a teenager growing up in Colombia. This unique style combined the rich tapestry of the indigenous ethnic groups of Colombia, the Afro-Colombian community, the Caribbean and of course Ghana. I am committed to building a brand that is not only environmentally sustainable but equally responsible to my community and the world a s whole. |
How does your work positively impact culture + community? |
The creation of the brand started off with the intention of making my voice heard through my love for fashion. It has since afforded me the opportunity to be part of sustainable fashion workshops an outreaches where I have been able to share my message to many others embarking on this journey. With that being said, through my brand, I have worked with entities such as the OR Foundation and Nyame Do, where I have conducted trainings and served as resource person from the Industry. Again, through the gift of being the Founder of Ekuaaddo I have also managed to set up knowledge based sessions with business consultants for up and coming artists such as myself. These sessions have covered, marketing, product and pricing strategies to enable attendees become more intentional with the way and manner they operate their businesses. As the Founder of Ekuaaddo, I have also prioritised the idea of reviving the cotton industry in Ghana through a research document which was worked on a year ago. This research gave me the opportunity to discover and commission artists in the woven garment space. |
What message of hope or inspiration would you like to share with other women in our community who are also pursuing their dreams? |
A little goes along way, its easy to be scared by the prospect of not enough capital to start your dream but don’t give up start don’t wait start. |
