Deatra Starling: A Trailblazer Empowering Minority Students

In Rendon, Texas, Deatra Starling-Kinard has turned a tiny house on her property into a hub for learning and transformation. The founder of STAR Academic Services has dedicated her life to breaking barriers in education and empowering minority students to achieve excellence. Her journey, shaped by resilience, faith, and a deep commitment to her community, is inspiring change for generations to come.

Rooted in Heritage and Purpose

Deatra’s story begins in East Texas, where she was born to parents who instilled in her a profound sense of resilience and community. After her parents’ divorce, she lived between Texas and Louisiana, experiences that shaped her determination to succeed. A high achiever, Deatra graduated salutatorian of her high school and served as class president. She later attended Stephen F. Austin University, earning a dual degree in journalism and education, and made history as the first African American crowned Miss Stephen F. Austin in 1996.

Reflecting on her heritage, Deatra says, “As an African American woman with deep roots in the South, my heritage has instilled in me the values of resilience, community, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others. Growing up, I saw firsthand the challenges faced by minorities in accessing quality education and opportunities in STEM fields. This has fueled my passion for disrupting racial inequities in education and empowering underserved communities.”

The Inspiration Behind STAR Academic Services

With over two decades of experience in education, Deatra’s path to entrepreneurship was fueled by personal experiences. Her son, Lofton James, who was diagnosed with high-functioning autism and ADHD, struggled in traditional school environments.

“I founded STAR Academic Services in 2019 after realizing the mental toll of teaching in traditional schools and the desire to create something impactful,” she shares. “My inspiration came from my son, who faced significant challenges in school due to being misunderstood and mislabeled. His journey motivated me to build a business that advocates for children, equips them for success, and supports educators in finding freedom and fulfillment in their careers.”

A Mission-Driven Approach to Education

STAR Academic Services is built on a clear and transformative mission. “Our mission at STAR Academic Services is to disrupt racial inequities in the STEAM industry by equipping and empowering minority scholars to excel in advanced math, science, and STEAM-based learning,” Deatra explains. “My vision is to see a generation of scholars who not only thrive academically, but also contribute meaningfully to industries that shape our future.”

What makes STAR Academic Services unique is its focus on addressing the whole student. “Our holistic approach combines academic excellence with social-emotional learning and community engagement. We focus on building confidence, fostering resilience, and addressing the individual needs of each scholar and educator we serve.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like many entrepreneurs, Deatra faced significant challenges in building her business. “One of my greatest challenges was overcoming self-doubt and financial uncertainty when transitioning from a traditional teaching role to running my own business. I overcame this by leaning on my faith, seeking mentorship, and staying rooted in my purpose. Building a six-figure business has shown me the power of persistence and trusting the process.”

For Deatra, the rewards far outweigh the struggles. “The most rewarding experience has been seeing the transformative impact on the scholars and educators I serve. Whether it’s a student scoring above 26 on the ACT or an educator launching a successful tutoring business, these victories affirm the value of my work.”

The Importance of Serving the Diaspora

Deatra is passionate about using education as a tool to uplift communities across the diaspora. “Providing services to the diaspora is vital because education is a powerful tool for breaking generational cycles of poverty and inequity. By equipping our communities with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed, we ensure that they can confidently pursue opportunities and redefine what success looks like for minorities.”

Looking Ahead

Deatra’s vision for the future is both bold and inspiring. “STAR Academic Services is more than a business; it’s a mission-driven organization committed to creating lasting change. We’re here to empower, inspire, and uplift our community, proving that financial independence and meaningful impact can go hand in hand.”

Her advice for others is equally motivational.

“If you’re dreaming of achieving your goals, know that every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your vision. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remember that your story has the power to inspire others. Trust in God’s timing, stay focused, and never shrink from who you are.”

A Special Opportunity

As part of her mission, Deatra offers a free mini-workshop titled “3 Secrets to ACT Success.” “This workshop will provide insider tips, proven strategies, and a roadmap to help students boost their ACT scores and build confidence for test day,” she shares.
