Sekoya East Africa

Sekoya East Africa

Sekoya East Africa is a non-profit community arts organization that gives emerging craft artists capacity to build professional careers and sustainable businesses through skill building workshops, mentorship, entrepreneurship training and brand visibility. We are the producers of Sekoya Magazine, the first East African crafts and culture publication that shares an authentic narrative of our community with the world. Our projects range from craft workshops, artists’ networking events to creative wellness circles. Deaf children and youth are a priority group for us, so we run an annual donation drive for art supplies which are upcycled and donated to a local school or institution for the deaf.

We also partner with organizations out of the craft industry and provide them with artistic ways of delivering solutions to the communities they serve. To this end, we have used audio-visual storytelling to bring awareness about sickle cell anaemia, taught teenage girls how to hand sew menstrual hygiene personal bags, and this September are working with a local poet to run a social media campaign on suicide prevention.

Since being founded in August 2020, we have produced over 30 programs and events engaging more than 500 artists and community members so far.
